In the latest installment of Maris Jones’s Evolution of Punk series, Maris shows us punk in the time of the Material Girl.
In keeping with the 1980s theme, the video kicks off with a hilarious parody of The Breakfast Club. Maris and Jacob Kornwolf play Tina Lupalala and Brock Harper-Smith Jr., the stars of Lunch Date—“the summer of 1985’s biggest blockbuster hit yet,” according to Brock Harper-Smith Jr.
If you ask me, Lunch Date could be the blockbuster hit of next summer if Maris made a feature-length version for real: Maris and Jacob’s impressions of Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson are pitch-perfect, and I am living for the romantic tension. Will the girl who “likes hunnies and shopping” and up with the “guy with all these emotions”? I wanna know! Plus, the 1980s-movie references are on point: the decision to underscore their meet-cute with the Thompson Twins’ “If You Were Here” is an inspired choice. (Hello, birthday-cake scene at the end of Sixteen Candles!)
After the knockoff-MTV intro, Maris and Jacob launch into a series of pitch-perfect impressions of 1980s rockers like the Talking Heads and the Pixies. Check it out!
