When I was 18 years old, I spent two months making cheese and honey in a Greek Orthodox monastery. I have never been religious, but I was inspired by the love these women had for each other and how much they willingly gave up to be together.
Although the monastery was the closest I have ever come to an ideal community, I know I could never become a nun and give what was required. I wanted "Nuns" to explore how personal freedoms can limit our ability to join a collective: whether it is better to have freedom to express your most authentic self, or to have a group of people who love and care for you unconditionally.
