What We'll Miss About the Obamas

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama brought something refreshingly new to the White House (besides plenty of melanin). They brought a sense of style, grace, and swag that we haven’t seen since the days of the Kennedys. We will miss seeing their Black Love on front street, their tender moments of parenting their two daughters, and their involvement in youth movements and pop culture. From Michelle Obama dancing, playing basketball, and showing her well-toned arms, to President Obama quoting Jay-Z, singing Al Green, and throwing shade at other politicians, there are so many reasons why this family will be missed.

The Obamas truly are just all-around great people with tons of swagger to spare. Michelle Obama is quite possibly one of our most stylish, outside-the-box First Ladies yet: no mom-jeans for this lady. She is beautiful, smart, classy, and accomplished. Her style and grace will go down in history. I recall when she first came into office and was blasted by the media for wearing sleeveless dresses. Sounds like hateration to me. If I had arms like Michelle, I’d be wearing sleeveless dresses and shirts all year long, including winter. She works hard to keep her body toned, and there is nothing wrong with showing it off in a tasteful manner (which she does).

First Lady Obama is not afraid to be a little goofy and fun. We’ve seen her dance and play basketball with NBA players on multiple occasions. Her fun side just seems to come out so naturally. The way she interacts with her husband and children also seems so natural and unforced. You can see the genuine love, respect, and admiration that she has for her family.

Watching daughters Malia and Sasha grow up right before our eyes over the past 8 years has been awesome. We’ve literally watched them grow into young women. I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for them to go through the regular trials and tribulations of puberty in front of the entire world. But like their mom, they also handled it with style and grace. The President and First Lady have not shied away from sharing that they have regular issues just like the rest of us when it comes to parenting. From choosing the right schools, to concerns about their daughters dating, Barack and Michelle have shown us that parenting doesn’t slack just because you live in the White House – and they have obviously done an excellent job with Malia and Sasha. We have never heard about any scandals surrounding these two young women. They have been groomed for greatness. With the help of their two loving parents, they are sure to be successful in every aspect of their lives.

Finally, we get to the man of the hour – President Obama. What can I say about him…except EVERYTHING! This man is the epitome of cool, calm, and collected. I have never seen him lose his cool, even when under pressure. He is subject to break into song at any given moment, and actually has a bit of talent! Like Michelle, President Obama also has a love of basketball. Children and animals alike LOVE him (which says a lot…we know how shady kids and animals can be). Even with so many people who did not want him sitting where he is right now, he has always remained positive, pleasant, and willing to do what has to be done for the greater good. President Obama is liked, admired, and respected far and wide – not just in the U.S., but all over the world.

What I love most about the Obamas is that they are relatable. Even with all the fame, prestige, education, and accomplishments, they seem just like you and me. I could easily imagine Michelle and Barack being my neighbors, attending PTA meetings, and just being my hangout partners. I can see it now: Michelle and I having coffee at Starbucks, going shopping at the mall, having spa days… Barack inviting my family over for a barbeque, him tending to the grill wearing socks and sandals…but I digress. The Obamas genuinely seem like regular, good folks. More than that, the Obamas brought something special and unique with them – hope. They brought hope to this country, to everyone, but especially to the African American community. For the first time, African American children began to actually believe that they, too, could become President of the United States one day. Seeing someone who looks like you accomplish something so huge makes my heart feel so full.

I will miss the Obamas a great deal when they leave the White House, and I am sure that I’m not alone in that sentiment. But I’m sure they’ll still be around in a big way, still making their presence felt by America. I am sad to see them go, but also excited to see what they will do next. I do not believe that we will ever have another President and First Lady like this awesome couple. They broke barriers and made history, and we will surely never forget them.
