With exciting Klingon-related updates about Star Trek: Discovery whetting our appetites, the geekier among us are newly hungry for updates on Star Trek 4. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for the juicy details. According to Zachary Quinto, J.J. Abrams and co. are still working on the script.

As frustrating as this non-news may be, it makes a lot of sense that they’re taking their time: shortly before Star Trek Beyond opened last year (to flagging box office returns), Anton Yelchin—the actor who has appeared in all three films as Russian ensign Chekov—suddenly passed away. While Chekov isn’t the main character of the franchise, his absence will certainly be missed—which begs the question of what Abrams was planning to do for Star Trek 4. Recast the role? Kill off the character? Have him transferred to another ship offscreen?

Tumblr user iprayforangels has another idea:

Personally, we're all-in. While Russia and the U.S. haven't exactly mended their relationship, it seems fairly safe to say that Russian individuals themselves are not quite viewed as the pariahs they were some 30-odd years ago. Meanwhile, positive portrayals of Muslim characters have always been hard to come by—and in this era of unprecedented polarization, it's more important than ever to show audiences a strong Muslim woman they can empathize with, root for, and come to love.
