When I was in school, my back-to-school outfit was my most meticulously planned outfit of the year. (Yes, including prom.) The new school year was a new beginning—I set new goals and was ready to take on the world. While you may be back to your favorite hoodie-and-jeans combo by day two, it never hurts to start off on a winning foot by dressing to impress on day one. Here are some tips for putting your best foot forward.

  1. Check the weather
I always wanted to wear cute sweaters on the first day of school, but September in Virginia is still H-O-T. Check the weather to get a feel for what type of clothing you’ll want to be working with.

  1. Decide who you want to be this year
New beginnings are wonderful. If you’ve had a personal renaissance, want to become a better you, or are just trying out a new style, the beginning of the school year is the best time to get started. Get out your vision boards and decide who you want to be!
  1. Choose what you love in your closet
If you have one piece in your closet that makes you feel hella confident, plan the rest of  your outfit around it. Comfort is key, so it is great to be in a piece which you know works for you.

  1. Decide what you need
Once you’ve picked what you love from your closet, it’s time to see what you’re missing. Whether it’s a cute top to go with your favorite jeans or a breezy boho dress to compliment your favorite ankle booties, it’s time to hit the shops.
  1. Prep the night before
Make sure everything is clean, ironed, and laid out the night before school. A stress-free morning is key for a stress-free day!
