Distortion is a photo series about self-acceptance. Society and the media are constantly creating standards of beauty, or ideas of what “normal” should be. The true reflection of myself, whether appearance-wise or mentally, is often obscured, as if I am looking at a smudged mirror. In Distortion, the model is surrounded by soft mesh littered with flowers, creating both aesthetic pleasure and the notion of delicate, hazy vision. Warm and intimate lighting is abstracted by prisms, symbolizing the misinterpretation of myself, done by myself. The images depict the ongoing journey of understanding who I am, as well as the confusing task of finding my identity through the blurs and refractions of society’s ideas.
